Herzog & de Meuron

“We’ve always approached the design of furniture — chairs, stools, tables, lamps — as something organic and intuitive, responding to personal needs or specific architectural projects. That’s why so many of our objects are named after places: they’re deeply rooted in context.”

Herzog & de Meuron is a globally acclaimed architectural practice headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Founded in 1978 by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the studio is now led by the two founders alongside a team of partners and a CEO, shaping a practice that spans continents and disciplines.

Today, more than 600 collaborators form an international network working across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. In addition to its main office in Basel, the practice operates studios in Berlin, Munich, Paris, London, Hong Kong, New York, and San Francisco, along with site-specific offices in cities such as Copenhagen, Jerusalem, and Hangzhou.

Over the years, Herzog & de Meuron have created more than 600 bespoke objects — from furniture and lighting to textiles and architectural details like coat hooks and door handles. Each piece is tailor-made for a specific building or context, reflecting the studio’s belief that design is inseparable from place and purpose.

Their design studio, H&dM Objects, manages this unique archive and continues to develop new creations in collaboration with master artisans, manufacturers, and specialized factories — staying true to the studio’s vision of meaningful, detail-driven design.
